Higher, faster, further, more. Unlimited growth. We live in a world of growth logic and constant acceleration: Production, the pace of work, the flood of information, opportunities, demands and events in everyday life are increasing. More and more can and should be achieved. However, the consequences and pitfalls of a constantly accelerating modern age are also becoming ever clearer – in the environment, in society and in ourselves.
Slowing down is necessary in order to reconnect with the world, with things, with our personal environment and with ourselves. Slowing down or acting more thoughtfully can reveal new qualities behind the (work/leisure) stress. Slowing down is both a prerequisite and a component of sustainable development – and degrowth is a central sustainability strategy.

In the workshop, we will go on a search together. We will discover acceleration and deceleration, alienation and connectedness in our lives. In an open process, we will look at what is important, what can change and what should remain. We will give you various exercises and methods to try out and reflect on. It’s less about a result and more about discovery. Between the first and second half-day, you will observe your everyday life and see which spaces are available for slowing down. Then you try out what opportunities you can create or already have to slow down.

Lecturer:

Annika Fricke is a research associate at the Karlsruhe Transformation Center for Sustainability and Cultural Change (KAT) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). She previously studied geoecology at KIT and the accompanying study program Sustainable Development at ZAK. She is currently working on the projects “School of Transformation” and “#climatechallenge”. She deals with various topics: Sustainable development, personal sustainability, transdisciplinary and transformative sustainability research, education for sustainable development, deceleration.

Benedikt Brockhaus studied engineering education and thus shapes the educational interface between technology and people. During his time at the Karlsruhe Transformation Center for Sustainability and Cultural Change (KAT) at KIT, he was involved in research into personal sustainability and deceleration.
Through his work, he wants to help people not only to be exposed to change in the world, but to actively help shape it. Because sustainability is fun and is for everyone!
