In a scientific writing assignment, you are confronted with various requirements: Adhering to citation rules, finding the common thread, correctly presenting the state of research, formulating it in your own words, designing the layout and much more. It is not easy to reconcile all these aspects and it can feel overwhelming. The online course on writing and text skills can help! Here you will receive basic information and support to help you write successfully:
- Laboratory experiment, field experiment, literature work and co: case studies from various disciplines show what is important for the different types of scientific work.
- Formulate correctly: Numerous text examples illustrate what characterizes scientific language style.
- Citing sources correctly: The course shows how to do this and thus also serves to prevent plagiarism.
- In addition: creating timetables, tips for a successful supervision relationship, advice on corrections and much more.
Information about the course:
The course will be activated for you on Ilias on 21.10.2024. In addition to working through all the content and exercises, you will need to attend a writing consultation to successfully complete the course. You will receive the access link to the Ilias course room as well as more detailed information on booking an appointment and the writing consultation process in an introductory email on 21.10.2024.
Target group: Students of all disciplines, especially in the lower semesters
Topics of the online course include Applying writing strategies / creating a schedule / clarifying the supervision situation / outlining / formulating / proofreading

Acquisition of basic writing and text skills in an academic context
Workload for ECTS:
2 ECTS: Completion of the online course and creation of a project outline with formal parts and a text sample (approx. 2 pages of continuous text) on a topic of your choice from your subject area and attendance of a writing consultation
Lecturer:
Lisa Sielaff studied German Studies (M.A.) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and has been a research assistant at the Writing Lab of the House of Competence (HoC) since 2022. Among other things, she is involved in the design of online courses on collaborative writing and research as well as the development of teaching and learning materials for writing with text-generating AI. She is also in charge of tutor training for the Writing Lab’s writing consultancy.
