Short Stories. For storytelling on five standard pages: Whether it’s a literary magazine, a reading series or an award, the type of text required of young authors at the beginning of their careers usually ranges between five and ten standard pages. In a small space, it should captivate readers, make listeners sit up and take notice, and impress jurors. And often enough, it becomes the nucleus for longer forms. So what distinguishes the short story in which character development, suspense, and double bottom have to be put down on paper in just a few strokes?

Workload:
3 ECTS: Preparation, presentation and discussion of at least one short story á 5 standard pages.

Lecturer:
Yannic Han Biao Federer lives and works as a freelance writer in Cologne. He writes novels and short stories, essays and reviews, among others for Deutschlandfunk, WDR and SWR. His debut novel Und alles wie aus Pappmaché was published by Suhrkamp Verlag in 2019, followed by his second novel Tao in March 2022. He is a member of PEN Berlin and the Junge Kolleg at the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
