In this course, students learn the basics of scientific writing with LaTeX. An internship report from bioengineering is used as a guiding document. Contents of the course are, for example, the structure of the report, the formatting of text and physical quantities, the integration of figures, the creation of tables and formulas as well as automatic cross-references within the document. Half of the course consists of short lectures by the lecturer and half of practical work by the students on their own computers (they must bring their own laptop to the course).

Booking of the course: Students from BIW can have this course credited as a LaTeX workshop as part of the course “Wissenschaftliches Schreiben mit LaTeX für BIW” (no term paper is then required). Students of all other disciplines can receive 1 ECTS for this course by submitting a term paper.

Workload for ECTS:

1 ECTS: 4.5 hours attendance, 17.5 hours preparation and follow-up, 8 hours writing the term paper

 

Lecturer:

Achim Winandi works at the writing lab in the KI@HelpBW project. He has been teaching courses on scientific writing with LaTeX and similar programs at KIT for many years.
