Are you in a higher semester or are you about to start writing your thesis and want to know how to write in an appropriate scientific style? In this course you will learn which rules you have to follow and which criteria your texts should meet.

We will follow all the relevant steps that you make when writing your thesis: You will learn how to narrow down your topic, write your research question and deal with scientific literature. We will also discuss how you can structure your text and develop a “central theme”. In addition, you will practice how to present your results precisely, how to argue conclusively and how to write a text that is easy to read. Last but not least, we deal with the formal standards of an academic paper – from correctly quoting literature to including images in your text to creating a bibliography.

In the seminar you will have the opportunity to try out and discuss the jointly developed approaches in individual, partner and group exercises. Parallel to the online sessions, an online course will be created via ILIAS in which you will find various material and writing exercises that we will refer to in the seminar and for which solutions you will receive feedback. Your main task will be to write an exposé during the semester, which we will prepare step by step in the seminar. A few days before the start, you will receive an email with detailled information about the organization of the course.

Learning goals:
You will learn which conventions you need to follow in academic writing and you will get to know specific strategies that help you when writing your paper or thesis. You will also have the opportunity to develop your writing skills.

Workload:
2 ECTS: Preparation of an exposé with a short text sample (approx. 1 page continuous text)
3 ECTS: Preparation of an exposé with a short text sample (approx. 2 pages of continuous text)
