Based on e-learning modules and virtual meetings, this course offers important insight into the process of writing academic and scientific texts. It is interdisciplinary but has a focus on STEM subjects.

One goal of this course is to create a professional research synopsis using a systematic literature search.

Another focus is the critical feedback of existing scientific texts. Tips about the writing process are also part of the course contents.

Prerequisites:
Third semester or higher

Learning Objectives:

  • Searching for and look through research literature
  • Using databases effectively
  • Planning and writing a thesis
  • Using scientific and academic (text) conventions
  • Professional handling of research data

Work Expenditure:
2 ECTS: E-learning modules, research synopsis
3 ECTS: E-learning modules, extended research synopsis

Lecturer:
Andreas Hirsch-Weber is the director of the Writing Lab at the House of Competence. His main topics are writing and information competencies, good scientific practice, competence development through e-learning, and writing science research with a focus on STEM subjects.

Dr. Alexandra Axtmann is the deputy director of research services at the KIT Library on the North Campus. After studying art history at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) and musicology at the State University of Music in Karlsruhe, she worked for several years as an independent art historian in several museums and academic libraries, including KIT. She is a lecturer at ZAK and HoC.
