When and how can text-generating AI be used supportively and honestly in the academic research and writing process? And when should it be avoided?
This course teaches basic skills for academic work with AI. The focus is not on increasing efficiency, but on how you can use AI to improve your own skills and thus the quality of your own work.
You can expect the following content:
- Technology (How LLM work) and responsibility (Why I would never use AI, but you should still learn it in this course)
- Research with AI
- Good scientific prompting and AI editing
- Communication processes with LMM (Communication in the fog; Rhetoric coach or bore?; Can AI coach my writer’s block?)
In addition to working on the learning material on your own, this course includes the writing of an essay and a final oral reflection discussion.
The course will be activated for you on Ilias on 27.04.2026. You will receive the access link to the Ilias course room and all further information on the course schedule in an introductory email on 27.04.2026.
Note:
The essay and the reflection discussions are, with the agreement of the students, also the subject of the research project KI@helpBW of the writing lab in cooperation with the KIT library (https://llm-literacy.de/ki-at-helpbw/). Participation is voluntary. No personal data of participating students will be collected.
